WWII_Poland_Invasion_1939-09-01.jpg(600 × 411 pixels, file size: 50 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

German soldiers destroying Polish border checkpoint in Sopot on September 1939. Invasion of Poland and World War II in Europe begins. The image does not show the actual border crossing of 1 September 1939 but was staged a few days later.

Note: Sopot was a town on the border between Poland and the Free City of Danzig (inhabited mostly by Germans) the men in black uniforms accompanying the soldiers are probably policemen or border guards from Danzig.

This is a unique historical photo usually used to illustrate the outbreak of World War II. Its use adds significantly to the article about World War II. Valentinian (talk) 10:57, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
